I once had a designer and teacher I highly respect tell me that the audience should be able to understand an entire show simply by looking at the costumes, that same designer also told me that if I ever have an opportunity to talk about my work in a program I should turn it down as my designs should speak for themselves. Some uncompromising and passionate advice that is a constant challenge to live up to, twenty years later and that advice is still my mantra whenever I start designing a show. My first question always becomes – “What am I trying to say about this world and the people in it?” Over the past twenty years I have created some stunning designs that have grown clearer and more refined with each production. On this page you will find selected costume photos from six productions that I believe tell a story from start to finish through colour, fabric and how that actor wears their costume. In standing with my previous teachers’ advice I will allow the designs to speak for themselves.
